Building Stronger Donor Relations

Wounded Warriors Canada (WWC) is a nonprofit that works to support trauma-exposed professionals (veterans and first responders) and their families through free mental health programs. Similar to other nonprofit service providers, they rely on building long-term relationships with donors. This project explores how WWC could improve its donation experience to attract younger donors, build emotional connection, and encourage repeat giving.

Challenge

How might we build emotional connection and trust to encourage recurring donations?

WWC has a powerful mission, but its donation experience did not clearly explain its programs or create a lasting relationship with donors.

Solutions

Personalized Donor Onboarding

Create a welcoming experience after a donor’s first contribution.

Milestone Recognition

Recognize donors throughout their journey.

Story-Driven Campaigns

Use real stories to make WWC’s impact more relatable

A More Transparent Website

Redesign the website to make information easier to find and understand.

Process

Research & Analysis:

  • 32 interviews with potential donors ages 20–28 years old

  • Usability testing of WWC’s donation journey

  • Comparative analysis of another nonprofit

Young adults are willing to donate but need financial flexibility, transparency, personalized communication, and clear impact. Emotional stories and measurable outcomes can build trust and encourage recurring support.

Solutions

Personalized Donor Onboarding:

Create a welcoming experience after a donor’s first contribution.

Features:

  • Personalized thank-you messages

  • Welcome packages for recurring donors

  • Communication preference surveys

  • Program-specific updates

Goal: Help donors feel welcomed and connected from the beginning.

Milestone Recognition

Recognize donors throughout their journey.

Examples:

  • Six-month thank-you letters

  • One-year anniversary updates

  • Messages from WWC leadership

  • Program progress reports

  • Personalized evidence of impact

Goal: Show donors that their continued support is meaningful.

Story-Driven Campaigns

Use real stories to make WWC’s impact more relatable.

Content:

  • Program outcomes

  • Personal stories

  • Statistics

  • Evidence of impact

A More Transparent Website

Redesign the website to make information easier to find and understand.

Improvements:

  • Clear donation categories

  • Simple program explanations

  • Improved navigation

  • Transparent impact information

  • Easier access for donors and program participants

Conclusion

Our findings suggested that attracting a donor was only the first step; ensuring their continuous support in the future required proper information, recognition, and involvement in supporting the organization’s mission.

By providing informative and transparent information, flexible support options, personalized communication, and donor recognition, WWC will be able to turn one-time donors into lifelong supporters.

The proposed experience will position the donors as partners in achieving positive change by providing them with information on how their support makes an impact, which encourages them to continue donating.
